The San Francisco 49ers host the Washington Commanders on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 8:15 p.m. ET (5:15 p.m. PT) at Levi’s Stadium. San Francisco is 5-0 and one of the NFL’s last unbeaten teams, while Washington is 1-3-1. The game airs on ESPN and ABC as Monday Night Football. Below, we compare the two teams through five games, look at the injuries that matter and give our score prediction.

Where both teams stand after five games

The records are far apart, and so are the scoring numbers. San Francisco scores 7.8 more points per game and allows 11.2 fewer. Washington’s one clear edge is ball security: its +5 turnover differential ranks second in the league.

San Francisco’s results: beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-7, beat Miami 35-13, beat Arizona 36-30, beat Denver 24-14, beat Seattle 32-29.

Washington’s results: lost to Philadelphia 24-22, lost to Dallas 37-20, beat Seattle 33-31, lost to Indianapolis 30-13 in London, tied the New York Giants 27-27.

What the common opponent tells us

Both teams have played Seattle, and both won by two or three points.

Opponent

49ers

Commanders

Seattle Seahawks

Won by 3 (32-29) on the road

Won by 2 (33-31)

That result is a reminder that Washington can score with good teams. It beat Seattle with backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, while Jayden Daniels was out. The difference is consistency: San Francisco has won all five games, while Washington has allowed 30 or more points three times.

Three factors that will decide the game

1. Jayden Daniels’ return. Daniels dislocated his left elbow against Dallas in Week 2, his second elbow dislocation in 11 months, according to CBS Sports. He missed two games and returned in the Week 5 tie with the Giants, where his 38-yard touchdown run reached 20.54 mph, the fastest play of his career per Next Gen Stats (Heavy). His legs are Washington’s best way to stress a San Francisco defense that has allowed 18.6 points per game.

2. Brock Purdy against a defense that gives up points. Purdy has 1,196 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions through five games. Washington has allowed 29.8 points per game, including 37 to Dallas and 30 to Indianapolis. If Purdy keeps protecting the ball, the Commanders will need to score in the high 20s to keep up.

3. Washington’s takeaways. The Commanders are +5 in turnover differential, second in the NFL, and that is how they have stayed close in games. San Francisco is +2. One or two extra possessions for Washington would make this a much closer game than the records suggest.

Strengths and concerns for each team

San Francisco 49ers

•           Strength: a 5-0 record and the NFL’s third-ranked scoring offense at 30.8 points per game.

•           Strength: Purdy’s 13 touchdowns against two interceptions.

•           Concern: Bosa and Evans both missed Thursday’s practice.

•           Concern: two of the five wins (36-30 against Arizona, 32-29 at Seattle) came down to one possession.

Washington Commanders

•           Strength: a +5 turnover differential, second in the league.

•           Strength: Daniels is back and showed his speed in Week 5.

•           Concern: a defense allowing 29.8 points per game.

•           Concern: injuries at running back and wide receiver, with Diggs and Croskey-Merritt missing Thursday’s practice.

A series San Francisco has controlled lately

San Francisco leads the all-time series 23-12-1, including playoffs, according to Champs or Chumps. The 49ers have won the last two meetings: 37-20 at home on December 24, 2022, and 27-10 in Washington on December 31, 2023. This is the teams’ first meeting since then.

SprintDesk’s prediction

Our prediction: 49ers 30, Commanders 20.

San Francisco is the more complete team on both sides of the ball. It scores almost eight more points per game, allows more than 11 fewer, and plays at home. Washington’s defense has not held a team under 24 points this season, and Purdy has been efficient and careful with the ball.

We expect Washington to keep it competitive for a half. Daniels’ running and the Commanders’ knack for takeaways can produce a quick score or two. Over four quarters, though, San Francisco’s offense should create more scoring chances than Washington can match.

What could change our view: if Bosa and Evans are both ruled out and Washington wins the turnover battle by two or more, this becomes a one-score game. If Daniels is limited as a runner, San Francisco’s margin could be larger.
